Recent Veto Override Makes Expanded Opportunity Scholarship Funding Now Available!

On November 20th, The North Carolina General Assembly overrode Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of HB 10—Require ICE Cooperation & Budget Adjustments, which included expanded funding for the state’s Opportunity Scholarship Program. That means that more than 54,000 additional students and families in North Carolina are now able to take advantage of Opportunity Scholarships. In addition, nearly 2,000 new Education Student Accounts are being offered. The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) is notifying newly-eligible students and families about their approval this week.

This is a welcome conclusion to a long process aimed at providing resources to assist families in choosing how to best educate their children. Based on income, families will be awarded between $3,360 and $7,468 per child to help them pursue the educational opportunities that best serve their children.

To help families, NCSEAA has a new FAQ document that answers many questions about the new additional funding process and expectations. Here are a few key points:

  • Check your MyPortal account to confirm your status and ensure your information is correct and ready for your offer.
  • You will have three weeks to accept your offer.
  • You cannot start a new application now.
  • Given the necessary steps involved, funds are likely to be disbursed to schools in early January.
  • Retroactive funding for the fall semester is available for students who were enrolled in the fall semester.
  • Students who were not enrolled in a private school in the fall and who can enroll in the spring, can use a newly approved scholarship.

For further information, see the NCSEAA K12 Funding page. Our friends and partners at Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina also have a Parent Liaison Team that can be a great resource for families with questions.
