Did you know that the National Day of Prayer originally started with the Second Continental Congress in 1775, before the Declaration of Independence was signed? Before America was even an official nation, our leaders knew the importance of prioritizing prayer and fasting. They wrote, “We may, with united hearts and voices, unfeignedly confess and deplore our many sins, and offer up our Joint supplications to the all- wise, omnipotent, and merciful Disposer of all events.” President Truman continued this tradition and issued a proclamation in 1952 formally instituting the National Day of Prayer, and then Ronald Reagan reinforced this in his own proclamation and signed a bill into law that made the first Thursday in May the official National Day of Prayer.
We encourage you to take the opportunity to join individuals across our country in prayer for our nation on Thursday, May 1. This year, the theme is “pour out to the God of hope and be filled,” based on Romans 15:13, which says, “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Here are a few ways you can get involved:
- Attend a prayer event. Groups across the state are hosting events, and you can find one near you here.
- Watch the national broadcast at 8pm EST, featuring Tim Tebow, Dallas Jenkins, and others!
- Use these prayer prompts to pray for America
- Use these prayer prompts to pray as a family
- Use these prayer prompts to pray specifically for your legislators
As Christians, prayer is the strongest weapon we have in the fight for Truth. We invite you to join us in coming before God and interceding on behalf of our state and nation.
“We pour out our hearts for our nation, for
the people and places, relationships and
responsibilities the Lord has established: the
Church, Family, Education, Business,
Military, Arts, Entertainment, Media, and
Government. May all who live, serve, and
steward in these be filled with Your purpose,
wisdom, strength, and truth.”
