This week is National School Choice Week. Across the country, groups are celebrating the ability of parents to choose the educational option that is best for their family. So, as we join in the celebrations, we wanted to share a few aspects of school choice in North Carolina that help make us a leader in the nation.
The Many Choices Available
There are many educational options available! These include:
- Public Schools (learn more here!)
- Home School (learn more here and here!)
- Virtual Schools (learn more here!)
- Charter Schools (learn more here and here !)
- Private Schools (learn more here and here and here!)
- Hybrid/University Model Schools (learn more here!)
Each of these offer unique advantages and allow families to select the option that is the best fit for them.
The Opportunity Scholarship Program
This valuable program offers scholarship money for families to send their children to private schools. In 2023, the North Carolina General Assembly expanded this program to make all NC families eligible regardless of household income; and in 2024, state lawmakers expanded the funding even more to meet a much higher than expected demand. You can learn more about this here.
You can also learn more about the Opportunity Scholarship Program and how your family can apply for the 2025-2026 school year by listening to our recent interview with Mike Long, President of Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina (PEFNC)!
