Last week, the NC Senate passed HB 823—Eliminate School Choice Program Waitlists (formerly titled, ‘Choose Your School, Choose Your Future’), and sent it to the NC House for consideration. The bill would appropriate an additional $248 million for Opportunity Scholarships in the upcoming 2024-2025 school year and relieve a waiting list of nearly 55,000 students and families who applied for educational choice scholarships.
In addition to expanded funding for Opportunity Scholarships, the bill would also appropriate an additional $24.7 million in recurring funds for the Education Savings Account program for K-12 students who are disabled.
Quickly passing this bill will allow parents to make informed decisions about their children’s education for the upcoming school year. By allowing parents time to make enrollment choices sooner, this bill also provides schools more time to make the necessary staffing and hiring decisions to prepare for the fall.
Contact your representative to show your support for this bill and help them understand why it’s so important to parents and schools statewide that it passes quickly.
