Dobbs Was Only the Beginning: The Fight for Life Two Years After the Overturning of Roe v. Wade

Two years ago, the United States Supreme Court handed down the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and returned the issue of abortion to elected representatives. Since this decision, 21states have enacted further pro-life legislation. While this was a monumental event, it was just the tip of the iceberg in the fight for life. Abortion has been thrust even further into the spotlight ever since, and now it is a focal point of the upcoming elections.

A Focus of the Biden Harris Campaign

One of the key focal points of the Biden campaign so far has been protecting “reproductive rights.” His executive orders “protecting reproductive rights” are listed by his administration among his top accomplishments as president. Since the start of his re-election campaign, his administration has published documents highlighting their work in this area, hosted events rallying people to stand up for these rights, and run a paid ad campaign on Google reminding people of this work.

Earlier this year, Kamala Harris made news when she visited an abortion clinic, as she was the first vice president to do so publicly. At a Planned Parenthood in Minnesota, she shared,

“Many of you have asked why am I here at this at — this facility, in particular.  And I will tell you, it is because, right now in our country, we are facing a very serious health crisis.  And the crisis is affecting many, many people in our country, most of whom are, frankly, silently suffering after the United States Supreme Court took a constitutional right that had been recognized from the people of America, from the women of America.”

It is heartbreaking to see that some of our nation’s leaders are not only okay with abortions, but are celebrating those who perform them and praise their work as heroic. As the election continues to approach, it is likely that this messaging will only increase.

A Focus of North Carolina’s Gubernatorial Election

Not only is this issue a focal point federally, but it is also a hot topic at the state level. The Democratic candidate for governor, Attorney General Josh Stein, has made the fight for “reproductive rights” a key part of his campaign as well. One of his ads that is being widely aired features his Republican opponent, Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, making comments about abortion and why he’s against it. Robinson, for his part, has been openly pro-life over the years, and will likely remain vocal about it throughout the election.

Another dynamic in this election is that North Carolina’s pro-life laws have faced lawsuits in the last few years, and Stein has declined to fulfill his role as Attorney General and defend North Carolina’s laws due to his position in favor of abortion. As a result, State Speaker of the House Tim Moore and Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger have intervened as defendants.

Abortion On the Ballots (Literally)

This November, voters in many states will have the opportunity to vote on their state’s abortion laws and possibly create a constitutional right to abortion in their state. These include Florida, Maryland, and South Dakota. Other states are considering this as well, including New York, Arizona, Arkansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, and Nevada.

While abortion is not literally on the ballot in North Carolina, the results of this election could drastically shape pro-life laws here. Republicans currently have a veto-proof supermajority in both the State House and Senate, which has proven to be essential for getting pro-life bills passed with a Democratic governor who has vetoed every pro-life bill. This could all change, though, with the outcome of the election.

Praying For Our Country

As the election gets increasingly heated, it is critical to maintain efforts to protect unborn children and their mothers. The Dobbs decision was an amazing win for the pro-life community, but the battle since then has been fierce. We must continue to pray that both our leaders and the citizens who vote for them will see the value of every human being, because each is created by God in His image (Genesis 1:27).
