One week after Democrat Josh Stein was sworn into office as North Carolina’s 76th Governor, the North Carolina General Assembly is holding an “organizational session” to kick start the 2025 Legislative Session. State lawmakers are scheduled to meet in Raleigh today at noon. The day’s activities will include administering the Oath of Office to state lawmakers, electing the Senate President Pro Tempore, the Speaker of the House, and other legislative officers; adopting rules for the operation of the respective chambers; as well as other business. Following today’s events, the General Assembly is expected to recess for a couple of weeks and then return to Raleigh at the end of January to begin the session in earnest.
State Senator Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) is expected to be elected to his eighth term as President Pro Tempore of the North Carolina Senate, while Representative Destin Hall (R-Caldwell) is expected to be elected to his first term as Speaker of the NC House. (Former NC House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) is now representing North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.) Republicans hold a veto-proof supermajority in the 50-member NC Senate but are one seat short of a supermajority in the 120-member NC House, setting the stage for a very interesting and potentially contentious session as the GOP-led legislature will once again face off against a Democratic-led Executive Branch.
NC Family will be a constant presence at the General Assembly representing the families of North Carolina and Biblical values before our state lawmakers. Stay tuned throughout the legislative session for information and updates from NC Family about important developments on issues like the sanctity of human life, religious liberty, parental rights, school choice, Biblical sexuality, predatory gambling, marijuana legalization, and much more.
