Southern Baptist Convention Passes Resolutions on Abortion, P*rnography, Sports Gambling, and More

Last week, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) convened in Dallas for its annual conference. While there, it adopted a series of resolutions reinforcing conservative, Biblical stances on many of America’s most pivotal issues.

“It is encouraging to see the Biblically conservative nature of the resolutions that were adopted at the SBC Annual conference this past week. The adopted resolutions are clearly focused on promoting family values and setting families up for success in North Carolina and across our nation.”  ~ Mitch Prosser, Vice President of NC Family

The “Moral Evils and Medical Dangers of Chemical Abortion Pills”

The SBC made several statements regarding this issue. It called upon the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to revoke its approval of the chemical abortion drug mifepristone. In addition, the SBC urged Congress and state legislatures to pass laws banning the manufacture and distribution of this drug and to hold those who violate these laws accountable for their actions. Finally, Baptist leaders recommitted to praying for and fostering a culture of life, urging pastors and church leaders to join them.

Banning P*rnography

Following up on previous resolutions in this area where the SBC has “decried p*rnography’s evil,” it urged Congress and state legislatures to pass laws that ban the creation and distribution of pornographic content. The SBC also exhorted parents to create “homes of holiness” and commended the recent passage of the federal Take It Down Act.

The Condemnation of Sports Betting

The SBC has long opposed gambling, and this year specifically condemned sports betting. It denounced the promotion and normalization of this predatory industry, and expressed concern about the detrimental impact of gambling on individuals, families, and communities. Finally, the SBC called on leaders at all levels of government to curtail sports betting and encouraged pastors and church leaders to continue to educate the church about this issue.

Restoring Marriage and a Biblical View of Sex

After reaffirming the Bible’s view of marriage, the SBC called for the overturning of laws and court rulings, including Obergefell v. Hodges, that promote alternative views of marriage.  It also called for defunding of Planned Parenthood, opposing laws or policies that compel people to speak falsehoods about sex and gender, and encouraging the view that children are blessings and not burdens.

A Strong Step in the Right Direction

NC Family appreciates these statements on these critical issues. It is encouraging to see church leaders in America take a strong, Biblical stance on topics that will have such a drastic effect on future generations. We pray that others will be inspired by the SBC’s actions and join together to publicly stand against these evils that plague our society.
