The North Carolina General Assembly has overridden Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of SB 20—Care for Women, Children, and Families Act, placing into law a bill that will save thousands of unborn lives every year and provide resources and support for women and families facing unplanned and crisis pregnancies. A primary provision of the bill will reduce the legal timeframe for most abortions in North Carolina from 20 weeks of gestation to 12 weeks. The 46-page bill contains a myriad of other important provisions, which NC Family has detailed in earlier reports.
Late Tuesday afternoon, the N.C. Senate overrode Governor Cooper’s veto on a party-line vote of 30-20, with all Republicans supporting the motion to override and all Democrats opposing it.
The N.C. House followed suit Tuesday evening, overriding the veto by a 72-48 party-line vote, again with all Republicans supporting the override and all Democrats opposing it.
Following the vote, many members of the State Senate and State House commented on how encouraging it was to see a gallery full of pro-life supporters as the chambers debated and voted to enact Senate Bill 20 into law over the objection of the Governor.
