ACTION ALERT: Urge Your State Lawmakers to Override Governor Cooper’s Expected Veto of Pro-Life Bill

Baby Being Held Ultrasound

According to news reports, Governor Roy Cooper is planning on vetoing SB 20—Care for Women, Children, and Families Act at a pro-abortion rally this coming Saturday. In the days leading up to this weekend, the Governor is campaigning around the state with representatives of Planned Parenthood, the State Democratic Party, and other abortion activists in an attempt to coerce key Republican state lawmakers to sustain his veto. Republicans have just enough votes in the State House and State Senate to override the Governor’s veto if all GOP members are present and vote for the override.

“The Governor’s anti-baby, anti-mother, and anti-life campaign is sickening and saddening,” said NC Family President John L. Rustin. “SB 20 is designed to save the lives of thousands of babies every year and to support mothers and families facing unplanned and crisis pregnancies, yet the Governor and his pro-abortion allies seem intent on trying to kill it.”

“NC Family calls on all pro-life citizens across the state to contact their state lawmakers to urge them to override the Governor’s veto of SB 20,” Rustin continued. “We also urge Governor Cooper to reconsider this ‘campaign of death’ and pray that he will change his mind and sign SB 20 into law instead of vetoing it.”

TAKE ACTION NOW: Please call your members of the State House and State Senate and urge them to OVERRIDE the Governor’s veto of SB 20. (NC Family’s Action Center will provide your legislators’ names and phone numbers as well as a sample message.)

In his tweet, which is also linked above, Gov. Cooper asks people to join him at a so-called “Veto Rally for Health Care Freedom” as he “vetoes this dangerous abortion ban and rallies supporters to help sustain his veto.” To refer to this political campaign as “Health Care Freedom” is offensive and disturbing, because a baby always dies as a result of a “successful” abortion. In fact, in over five hours of debate on the State Senate floor last week, not one of the twenty opponents of SB 20 acknowledged that abortion takes the life of an unborn child.

About Senate Bill 20 – As NC Family has previously reported, SB 20 is a 46-page bill that is loaded with important provisions, including measures that would:

  • Reduce the legal timeframe for most abortions in North Carolina from 20 weeks to 12 weeks (exceptions include rape, incest, life of the mother, or what the bill defines as “life-limiting anomalies”);
  • Ban “partial-birth abortion” as defined by federal law;
  • Prohibit abortions sought because of the race or sex of the unborn child or a diagnosis of Down Syndrome;
  • Enact the “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” requiring health care providers to care for babies born alive after a failed abortion attempt and to transport the newborn baby to a nearby hospital for care;
  • Require abortion clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers and be inspected annually;
  • Establish more detailed informed consent requirements for surgical abortions, chemical abortions, and abortions involving unborn children with a “life-limiting anomaly.”
  • Make it unlawful for abortion-inducing drugs to be provided to a pregnant woman by a physician or a drug manufacturer or supplier through the mail;
  • Prohibit the promotion and/or sale of an abortion-inducing drug over the internet.
  • Modify the state’s “Safe Surrender of Infants” law;
  • Provide approximately $160 million in funding to enhance foster care, adoption, child care, and other vital services in North Carolina.
