Yesterday evening, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the harmful and misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act,” which will repeal the definition of marriage in federal law as the union of one man and one woman, and weaponize the LGBTQ agenda against people of faith who hold to a Biblical definition of marriage. 

The bill passed 258-169, gaining the vote of every Democrat as well as 39 Republican Representatives. North Carolina’s 13-member congressional delegation split along party lines with all Democrats voting in favor and all Republicans voting against.

Interestingly, seven Republicans who had voted for the bill when it came before the House in July voted against it this time, many citing the lack of protections for religious liberty. These include Cliff Bentz (Ore.), Mario Diaz-Balart (Fla.), Brian Mast (Fla.), Dan Meuser (Pa.), Scott Perry (Pa.), Maria Elvira Salazar (Fla.), and Jefferson Van Drew (N.J.).

The bill is now being sent to President Biden, who is expected to sign into law in the near future.
