The U.S. Senate is currently considering a massive trillion-dollar infrastructure bill, H.R.3684. While portions of this legislation may be well-intentioned, its spending is out-of-control. Even worse, the Senate is now considering an amendment—S.A.2137—with a dangerous nondiscrimination provision that would elevate “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” (SOGI) to specially protected legal status in federal law, much like the so-called “Equality Act” has attempted to do.
The SOGI provision would be enforced through Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and our friends at Family Research Council warn that the provision would serve as a “stepping stone to achieving the ultimate goal of the Equality Act: a total overhaul of our federal civil rights framework to mandate special privileges based on SOGI classes.” Be sure to read FRC Action’s Action Alert on the bill.
While additional amendments have been proposed to remove the SOGI provision, these efforts have failed, and the Senate seems unwilling to remove this language from the final version of H.R.3684. Therefore, we need your help!
