The NC Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear a bill at 1:00 p.m. today that would legalize marijuana for medical use across the state. Senate Bill 711, entitled “NC Compassionate Care Act,” would allow individuals with a “debilitating medical condition” to legally use marijuana and possess an amount that is “reasonably necessary to assure the uninterrupted availability of cannabis for a period of 30 days.” The bill would also establish a “medical cannabis supply system” for the production and distribution of cannabis and cannabis-infused products in North Carolina.

Although some contend that marijuana should be legalized because it can provide relief from pain, nausea and other chronic conditions, its has never been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, the FDA has approved only one CBD-based medication, which is used to treat severe childhood epilepsy. Additionally, it has approved two synthetic cannabis-related products—one for treatment of nausea caused by chemotherapy and the other to increase appetite in patients with extreme weight loss caused by AIDS.
Moreover, the American Medical Association has said it “believes that cannabis for medicinal use should not be legalized through the state legislative, ballot initiative, or referendum process.”
Today’s marijuana is highly potent, containing up to 65 percent THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis), and it causes a myriad of negative physical, psychological, and social effects. As we have seen in other states, the legalization of marijuana can have incredibly harmful effects on individuals and families, including increased levels of drug addiction, crime, illicit drug trafficking, and motor vehicle accidents, just to name a few.
The authorization of cannabis for “medical purposes” also has often led to the complete legalization of marijuana for recreational use.
