Following the sunset late last year of a law that prohibited local governments from passing ordinances to regulate employment and public accommodations, six North Carolina cities and counties have voted to elevate “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” (SOGI) to the status of legally protected classes. More localities are being pressured to considering similar measures. As NC Family shared this past December, SOGI ordinances are: 1) harmful to small business owners and their employees; 2) harmful to churches, ministries, and faith-based nonprofits; and 3) harmful to women and girls in sports, economic opportunities, and privacy.
These are the same types of laws and ordinances that have been used to attack and punish Christian business people like Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips and Washington State florist Barronelle Stutzman, whose legal challenges have taken them all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and whose personal and professional livelihoods remain at stake. This is also the same action LGBTQ activists and some legislators are attempting to force on our nation right now at the federal level through the passage of the so-called “Equality Act.”
NC Family and other pro-family groups warned state and local leaders about the harms of these local SOGI ordinances in a joint letter sent just before the December sunset went into effect. This letter contains very useful information about different aspects of SOGI ordinances.
As of this week, six cities and counties in our state have passed local SOGI ordinances: Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, Greensboro, Hillsborough, and Orange County.
But LGBTQ activists in our state are not finished. They have made clear that they will continue to target cities and counties across North Carolina until SOGI ordinances have been broadly adopted. According to Equality NC and the Campaign for Southern Equality, there are twenty-three cities and counties that are specific targets areas.
