As the results of last week’s election continue to be calculated, one North Carolina race remains far too close to call. At the time of the writing of this article, the race for Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court between Associate Justice Paul Newby (R) and current Chief Justice Cheri Beasley (D) has Justice Newby leading by 181 votes with over 5.3 million votes cast!
In the last twenty-four hours, the lead in this race has fluctuated back and forth as results have been updated with newly-received absentee ballots and confirmed provisional ballots. Yesterday—Thursday, November 12—was the final day for absentee ballots to be accepted by the North Carolina State Board of Elections (assuming the ballots had been postmarked by Election Day, November 3).
The State Board of Elections continues to update the vote counts constantly (sometimes multiple times per hour), as county boards of elections submit their vote tallies. Due to the closeness of this race, it is likely that we will see a recount.
It is unclear when we will have a final result, but we continue to be patient and prayerful, and know that God is in control.
