Many Christians will observe the season of Lent, which begins tomorrow, February 26, with Ash Wednesday, and runs until Maundy Thursday on April 9. Lent is a time to reflect on the life, death, and victorious resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a time of humility, fasting, and repentance, leading to mourning His sacrifice on the cross on Good Friday, and celebrating His ultimate resurrection on Easter Sunday.
For some, Lent is a time to abstain from certain practices, like eating a particular food or using social media. But for others, spiritual discipline and sacrifice involves dedicating oneself to additional pursuits. Accordingly, thousands of people around the world will be joining in the 40 Days for Life campaign, which is “an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of an abortion business.”
Started in 2004 in Bryan/College Station, Texas by four members of the Brazos Valley Coalition for Life, 40 Days for Life grew from four people to more than 1,000 in less than six weeks. Since its first nationally coordinated launch in 2007, 40 Days for Life reports that its participants have saved 16,742 lives from abortion. Its YouTube page shares testimonies of participants whose prayers have been answered, and mothers whose lives have been changed and unborn children saved by this effort.
In North Carolina, vigils will be held in Asheville, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem. If you are unable to attend a prayer vigil in person, you can still join in the 40 Days of Prayer. 40 Days for Life provides free devotionals for you as you pray for the protection of innocent lives and an end to abortion.
