Platform Endorses Homosexual Marriage
Special Report - August 16, 2012
The national Democrat Party platform committee voted unanimously on August 11 to include in their platform both support for the redefinition of marriage and opposition to marriage protection amendments and laws. The proposed platform, which includes the “Freedom to Marry” plan, will be finalized by party delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte next month. If the controversial marriage plank remains in the final version, this will be the first time a major party platform has supported the redefinition of marriage and opposed efforts to preserve the historic definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
The proposed “Freedom to Marry” plank of the Democrat platform reads:
- We support the right of all families to have equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law. We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.
- We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.
The North Carolina Democratic Party 2011-2012 Platform also includes a “Marriage Equality” plank, which declares support for “marriage equality and domestic partnerships.” It also calls for the “repeal of the constitutional amendment known as NC Constitutional Amendment 1 [Marriage Protection Amendment], voted on and passed in May 2012.”
The Republican Party platform draft has not yet been released.
