NC Call to Prayer Legislative Event

This Monday, June 20, citizens from across North Carolina are invited to gather with a bipartisan group of state and national lawmakers at the State Capitol for the first-ever “North Carolina Call to Prayer Day.” The historic event is sponsored by the North Carolina Legislative Prayer Caucus, “a bi-partisan group of state legislators united to defend America's right to trust in God.” North Carolina is one of only 20 states that are currently working to form similar legislative prayer caucuses, which are modeled after the Congressional Prayer Caucus, an official caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives, which was formed in 2005 by Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R–VA) and a bipartisan group of lawmakers “to formally acknowledge the important role that prayer plays in American life and history and to monitor and work to guard the right of individuals in America to pray.” Congressman Forbes and Congressman Mike McIntyre (D–NC) currently serve as co-chairmen of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, which now has 83 members.

According to organizers of the event, the purpose of the “North Carolina Call to Prayer Day” is to help build support for the North Carolina Legislative Prayer Caucus; gather signatures for the “North Carolina Call to Prayer Proclamation;” and reaffirm support for the national motto, “In God We Trust.” Confirmed speakers for the event include: Congressman Mike McIntyre (D–NC), Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R–VA), Lt. Governor Walter H. Dalton (schedule permitting), Associate State Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby, and North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Cherie K. Berry.

The “North Carolina Call to Prayer Day” will be held at the South Lawn of the State Capital in Raleigh from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20.
