"Choose Life" Bill Introduced
Special Report - February 17, 2011
Fifteen Senators have cosponsored a bill to give pro-life motorists in North Carolina the option of supporting pregnancy resource centers across the state by purchasing a specialty “Chose Life” license plate. SB 73“Choose Life” Special Plate was filed by primary sponsors Senators Warren Daniel (RBurke), Austin Allran (RCatawba), and Kathy Harrington (RGaston) on February 15th.
The plate would cost motorists who want it an additional $35 per year. The funds generated from the plate would be directed “to the Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship, which shall distribute the money annually to nongovernmental, not‑for‑profit agencies that provide pregnancy services that are limited to counseling and/or meeting the physical needs of pregnant women.” The funds could not be directed “to any agency, organization, business, or other entity that provides, promotes, counsels, or refers for abortion and shall not be distributed to any entity that charges women for services received."
North Carolina currently allows motorists to purchase specialty plates for over 120 causes, including “Save the Sea Turtles,” shag dancing, professional and college athletic teams, and “AIDS Awareness.” A bill to allow North Carolinians the option of purchasing a “Choose Life” plate has been filed in the General Assembly for eight years without any consideration. North Carolina remains the lone southeastern state without such a plate option.
