Choose Life Month

Special Report - January 10, 2011

Proponents of the “Choose Life” license plate are stepping up their efforts to ensure that North Carolinians finally get the opportunity to purchase the specialty plates by designating January 2011 “Choose Life License Plate Month.” The effort is lead by the Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship (CPCF) and supported by members of the “Choose Life License Plate” coalition, including the North Carolina Family Policy Council, the Christian Action League, North Carolina Right to Life, and North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats. “For eight years, the legislation for the choose life plate has been denied a vote even though more than 130 other specialty plates have been approved,” a CPCF press release notes. “The Pro-Life community is hopeful that the new legislature will be more responsive to their request for the plate.”

“Choose Life” license plates are approved or available to motorists in 26 states, and nationally, the sale of these plates has raised $13.6 million for maternity homes, adoption agencies and pregnancy resource centers.  Although North Carolina currently allows the purchase of over 120 specialty plates, ranging from “Save the Sea Turtle” to “AIDS Awareness,” it is the only state in the southeast to not allow motorists to purchase a “Choose Life” specialty license plate. “Choose Life” license plate legislation has been introduced in the General Assembly for the past eight years but has not been considered. Coalition members are hopeful that with the recent changes in the makeup of the General Assembly and pro-life lawmakers in the majority in both chambers, 2011 will be the year for the “Choose Life” license plate.

“This year we hope to receive approval from committee chairs and reach the threshold of a supermajority in each chamber, 30 Senators and 72 Representatives,” said CPCF state director Bobbie Meyer in a press release.  “Our coalition members will be at the General Assembly for the filing of the bill to convince legislators that we have a need for this bill.”
