Upcoming Pro-Life Events
Special Report - January 12, 2010
The 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton is fast approaching, and a number of important events are scheduled this month to mark the 1973 Supreme Court rulings that legalized abortion on demand, and have resulted in the loss of over 49 million unborn children nationwide. With health care reform legislation pending in Congress, and the ongoing battle over taxpayer funding of abortions in the Senate version of the bill, 2010 is a critical year for the pro-life movement. Following is a list of some of the state and national events scheduled for this month.
This Saturday, January 16, North Carolina Right to Life will host its 11th annual “Prayer Breakfast for Life” at the Holiday Inn Brownstone Hotel in downtown Raleigh featuring Angela Franks, Ph.D.author of the Margaret Sanger’s Eugenic Legacyas the keynote speaker. Following the breakfast, the annual NCRTL March for Life and Rally will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Nash Square (located at the corner of Hargett and McDowell Streets). For more information, go here.
On Thursday, January 21, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will kick off the 2010 “National Prayer Vigil for Life” at 6:30 p.m. at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC. For more information, go here.
The American Life League’s “Personhood Conference” is also scheduled for January 21 at the Washington Court Hotel in DC (the full ALL Convention begins January 20), followed by the “Rock for Life Concert” that evening. Go here for more information.
The national “March for Life” will kick off in Washington, DC, on Thursday, January 21 with its annual convention from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, followed by a “White House mini-rally” from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with 3,000 pro-lifers gathering for prayer and songs at Lafayette Park. The “March for Life” is scheduled to begin at noon on Friday, January 22 at the national Mall, and will proceed along Constitution Avenue, up Capitol Hill to the Supreme Court and Congress. The theme for the 2010 March for Life is “Stand Up Now! Unite for the Life PrinciplesNo Exception! No Compromise.” The “March for Life” activities will culminate the evening of Friday, January 22 with the 28th annual Rose Dinner, which will feature Dr. Robert George of Princeton University, one of the authors of the “Manhattan Declaration.” For more information, visit the “March for Life” web site.
Finally, Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, an annual event for churches and individuals to focus on the sacred value of human life, is scheduled for Sunday, January 24. Many churches use this event to promote the work of pregnancy resource centers, which offer compassionate alternatives to abortion.
