Intelligent Design Expert Recognized

Special Report - December 14, 2009

One of the world’s leading scientific experts on Intelligent Design (ID) has received World magazine’s top honor as its 12th annual “Daniel of the Year.” The 2009 recipient of the annual award, which recognizes Christian leaders for outstanding courage, is Stephen Meyer, Ph.D., Director and Senior Fellow of the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture. Dr. Meyer is also the author of a groundbreaking new book on ID entitled, Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design.

In the latest issue of the magazine, World editor, Marvin Olasky, applauds Dr. Meyer for his courageous battle “to show that all lives have eternal value because they are the work of a Creator and not the product of chance.” Olasky describes Dr. Meyer as an “intellectual Daniel” whose career exemplifies four life patterns: questioning, discernment, courage, and perseverance. Meyer is a former geophysicist and college professor, who earned his Ph.D. in the history of the philosophy of science at Cambridge University. “From his office Meyer has ventured forth to debate at least nine prominent Darwinians on CNN, NPR, FOX, the BBC, and other venues,” writes Olasky. “In it he has written numerous newspaper and magazine columns in defense of Intelligent Design (ID), as well as an academic article that became notorious five years ago when Richard Sternberg, a Smithsonian-affiliated scientist, agreed to publish it in the peer-reviewed Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington.”

In August 2009, Dr. Meyer discussed Signature in the Cell and the theory of ID with North Carolina Family Policy Council (NCFPC) president, Bill Brooks, on the NCFPC’s weekly radio program, “Family Policy Matters.” The program aired as a two-part series in August 2009 on radio station across the state. “ID is the idea that there are certain indicators of intelligent activity, or conscience deliberation you might say, in the features of nature. We detect ID in the world around us all the time,” Dr. Meyer said on the program. “If you go to the Dakotas, you see the faces on Mount Rushmore, and you realize that those faces were constructed by intelligent agents—sculptors—rather than say, wind and erosion. And what ID advocates are saying is that there are…other indicators of intelligence present inside cells, or in the very structure of the universe.” To listen to the interview with Dr. Meyer, go here, and scroll down to the title, “DNA Evidence of Intelligent Design 1 &2.”

Dr. Meyer is also the host of the first two installments of Focus on the Family’s True U DVD apologetics series for high schools students, which the North Carolina Family Policy Council is selling for $39 each.
