40 Days For Life Begins Today
Special Report - September 23, 2009
The fourth 40 Days for Life campaign kicks off in over 212 cities worldwidewith at least six locations in North Carolinatoday. The focused pro-life effort emphasizes 40 days of prayer, fasting, vigil, and outreach to bring attention in communities to the evil of abortion nationwide. From September 23 through November 1, participants in 45 states will organize peaceful vigils to prayerfully witness to patients, employees, and communities outside local abortion clinics 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In North Carolina, vigils will be held in Alexander County, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem.
The campaign, which began in Texas in 2004, grew to 177 cities in 2008, and has expanded from the U.S. to Canada, Denmark, Australia, and Northern Ireland this year. According to the campaign’s web site, 1,561 lives have been spared from abortion, 18 abortion workers have quit, and three facilities have shut down since the campaign’s inception.
The 40-day time period hearkens to the Biblical history of God using 40 days to transform individuals, communities, and the world. The sacrifice of fasting is intended to be a form of physical prayer. Participants will also proactively take the pro-life message to their communities through focused, grassroots education efforts, including door-to-door petitions, informational flyers, church participation, media contact, and campus outreach.
