Hughes to Replace Wright

Special Report - April 4, 2008

The Executive Committee of House District 18 has named Sandra Spaulding Hughes as the replacement for the seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives formerly held by Thomas Wright. The committee, made up of four people, including a mayor and precinct chairman, chose Hughes in a meeting at the Pender County Courthouse Annex last night. Hughes, a former member of the Wilmington City Council, is also one of the candidates running for the House District 18 seat in the May primary.

Rep. Wright was expelled by a 102-12 vote from the House on March 20, 2008 due to six separate charges against him including pocketing for his personal use $8,900 in contributions to the Community’s Health Foundation, a charitable organization in Wilmington headed by Wright; the failure of Wright to report approximately $180,000 in campaign contributions received between 2000 and 2007; and a $150,000 bank loan that Wright allegedly obtained under false pretenses for the Community’s Health Foundation. His expulsion was the first of its kind since 1880. Wright is currently on trial for criminal fraud.
