Gambling Experts and Information
The gambling industry likes to use the word "gaming" to describe their activities. Again, a marketing attempt to put a nicer sounding name on an activity that produces serious social harms. We think of "gaming" as something you do for fun and amusement, but unless you are gambling on your gaming, you are not likely to lose your paycheck. Below are some links to information on gambling that you might find useful.

  • Bringing Las Vegas to North Carolina
    Despite a consistent history of opposition to expanded gambling in North Carolina, the General Assembly is considering amending the compact with the Cherokee Nation in the western part of the State, to allow Las Vegas-style casino game.     This is an excellent 2–pager by Professor Earl L. Grinols, Dept. of Economics, University of Illinois and is a summary of his official testimony before the Pennsylvania Senate Finance Committee on April 30, 2003. Professor Grinols is possibly the foremost economist working on gambling issues today.

    Also by Professor Earl L. Grinols is an excellent powerpoint presentation on The Economics of Gambling as presented on November 17, 2009 in New Hampshire.     Ever since Dr. James Dobson served on the National Gambling Impact Study Commission, Focus on the Family has had a gambling analyst on staff. Chad Hills has been covering the gambling scene for a number of years now and his posts on the subject have numerous links to lots of useful information.

    Concluding its two–year investigation into all aspects of gambling in the United States, we liked the comprehensive nature of the report so much that we posted it before the Commission disbanded its own website. "Sweepstakes" and "Internet Cafes"
In an attempt to put a nicer sounding name on video poker casinos, gambling operators have euphamistically named their latest gambling venues in North Carolina "Sweepstakes" and "Internet Cafes." Substitute the words "Video Poker" for "sweepstakes" and "Casino" for "cafe" and you'll have a more accurate description of these activities. Video Poker and Internet Casinos.     We're calling them casinos because that's what they are. This City of Wilmington map entitled "Existing Electronic Gaming Establishments" was generated on April 21, 2010. It shows about separate locations within the city limits, not including the rest of New Hanover County. If you gathered all the machines in these locations and placed them under one roof, no one would argue that you had a casino. By spreading them out across the city, they become more accessable in numerous locations and also make it much more difficult for local law enforcement.

Kindt formerly served as senior fellow at the London School of Economics, and holds several degrees in law and economics. Professor Kindt discusses the social and economic issues of compulsive gambling, and their relationship to video poker, and why all forms of video gambling, including the so-called “sweepstakes” machines that are popping up across North Carolina, should be banned.
